Bald ist Sommer, auch wenn das Wetter in Westeuropa gerade noch ein bisschen etwas anderes vermuten lässt. Und Sommerzeit ist bekanntlich Nachtzug-Zeit.

Unser Gastautor Sebastian Wilken (Zugpost) hat sich für uns durch unzählige Fahrpläne und fremdsprachige Ankündigungen gewühlt und ist auch heuer wieder fündig geworden: Ganze sieben saisonale Nachtzüge, die ausschliesslich diesen Sommer verkehren, hat er für uns entdeckt. Hier die Kurzversion:

Wien – Split (29. Mai – 25. Sept.) ÖBB Nightjet mit Sitz-, Liege- und Schlafwagen – plus Autotransport. Highlight: die spektakuläre Dalmatiner Bahn von Zagreb ans Meer, besonders der Abschnitt Knin–Split. Ab 25 € (Sitz), 35 € (Liege), 90 € (Schlafwagen geteilt).

Budapest – Rijeka / Koper (26. Juni – 30. Aug.) Der „Retro Istria Express" mit Wagen aus den 1970ern – Holzoptik, Abteilcharme, keine Klimaanlage, dafür offene Fenster. Ab 20 bzw. 25 € plus Aufpreis je Komfortkategorie.

Warschau – Rijeka / Koper (26. Juni – 28. Aug.) Der „Adriatic Express" der polnischen Bahn – neu mit Koper als zweitem Ziel. Fährt über Wien, also auch aus dem deutschsprachigen Raum interessant. Ab 45 € (Sitz) / 70 € (Liege). Speisewagen bis Wien.

Hafenstimmung in Split, wohin euch einer der saisonalen Nachtzüge hinbringt

Innsbruck – Malmö (4. Juli – 1. Aug.) Snälltåget verbindet Österreich direkt mit Südschweden – über München, Hamburg, Kopenhagen. Sitz- und Liegewagen, Speisewagen „Krogen" durchgehend. Preise noch ausstehend.

Malmö – Storlien (24. Juni – 4. Okt.) Ebenfalls Snälltåget, diesmal ins schwedische Fjäll. Hält in Åre und Östersund – ideal für Herbst- und Sommerwanderungen. Wer morgens in Hamburg abfährt, wacht am nächsten Tag im Fjäll auf. 

Bukarest – Istanbul (13. Juni – 10. Okt.) Auf den Spuren des Orient-Express – aber günstiger. Ein türkischer Liegewagen, knapp 24 Stunden Fahrt, 4-Bett-Abteile. Ca. 80 €.

Villach – Edirne (25. April – 10. Nov.) Der aussergewöhnliche Optima Express – zwei Nächte und ein Tag von Österreich quer durch den Balkan bis an die türkische Grenze. Primär als Autoreisezug, aber auch ohne Fahrzeug nutzbar. Ab 232 € (Liegewagen geteilt).

Ausgebuchte Nachtzüge – ein Mythos?

Wir haben uns gefragt: Wie beliebt sind Nachtzüge in diesem Sommer? Mit der Ölkrise und gestiegenen Kerosinpreisen könnte man die Annahme treffen, dass viele heuer mit dem Zug statt mit einem Flug verreisen. Ob dies wirklich so ist, seht ihr in unserer Analyse. Dear friends of night train travel,

Summer is just around the corner, even if the weather in Western Europe might suggest otherwise at the moment. And as we all know, summertime is night train time.

Our guest author, Sebastian Wilken (Zugpost, in German), has trawled through countless timetables and foreign-language announcements for us and has struck gold again this year: he's discovered a whopping seven seasonal night trains running exclusively this summer. Here's the short version:

Vienna – Split (29 May – 25 Sept.) ÖBB Nightjet with seating, couchette, and sleeping cars – plus car transport. Highlight: the spectacular Dalmatian Line from Zagreb to the sea, especially the Knin–Split section. From €25 (seats), €35 (couchette), €90 (shared sleeper cabin). 

Budapest – Rijeka / Koper (26 June – 30 Aug.) The "Retro Istria Express" with carriages from the 1970s – think wood-panelled interiors, old-school compartment charm, no air conditioning, but windows you can open. From €20 or €25 plus a supplement depending on the cabin category.

Warsaw – Rijeka / Koper (26 June – 28 Aug.) The "Adriatic Express" from Polish Railways – now with Koper as a second destination. It travels via Vienna, making it an interesting option for those starting from German-speaking countries too. From €45 (seats) / €70 (couchette). Dining car available as far as Vienna.

Innsbruck – Malmö (4 July – 1 Aug.) Snälltåget connects Austria directly with southern Sweden – via Munich, Hamburg, and Copenhagen. Seating and couchette cars, with the "Krogen" dining car available for the whole journey. Prices are yet to be announced.

Malmö – Storlien (24 June – 4 Oct.) Also a Snälltåget service, this time heading to the Swedish fells. It stops in Åre and Östersund – perfect for autumn and summer hiking. If you leave Hamburg in the morning, you'll wake up in the fells the next day. 

Bucharest – Istanbul (13 June – 10 Oct.) In the footsteps of the Orient Express – but more affordable. A Turkish couchette car, a journey of just under 24 hours, and 4-berth compartments. Approx. €80.

Villach – Edirne (25 April – 10 Nov.) The extraordinary Optima Express – two nights and one day from Austria across the Balkans to the Turkish border. Primarily a car-carrying train, but you can also travel without a vehicle. From €232 (shared couchette).

Sold-out night trains – a myth?

We asked ourselves: how popular are night trains this summer? With the oil crisis and rising kerosene prices, one might assume that many people are choosing to travel by train rather than fly this year. Whether that's actually the case, you can find out in our analysis.

A touch of Japan on the night train

Chers amis des voyages en train de nuit,

L'été arrive à grands pas, même si la météo en Europe de l'Ouest ne semble pas encore tout à fait du même avis. Et l'été, c'est bien connu, c'est la saison des trains de nuit.

Notre auteur invité, Sebastian Wilken (Zugpost), a épluché pour nous d'innombrables horaires et annonces en langues étrangères et, cette année encore, il a fait de belles trouvailles : il a déniché pour nous pas moins de sept trains de nuit saisonniers qui circuleront exclusivement cet été. Voici un petit résumé :

Vienne – Split (29 mai – 25 sept.) ÖBB Nightjet avec voitures à places assises, voitures-couchettes et voitures-lits – plus transport de voitures. Le point fort : la spectaculaire ligne de Dalmatie de Zagreb à la mer, en particulier le tronçon Knin–Split. À partir de 25 € (siège), 35 € (couchette), 90 € (wagon-lit partagé). 

Budapest – Rijeka / Koper (26 juin – 30 août) Le « Retro Istria Express » avec des voitures des années 1970 – look bois, charme des compartiments, pas de climatisation, mais des fenêtres qui s'ouvrent. À partir de 20 ou 25 € plus un supplément selon la catégorie de confort.

Varsovie – Rijeka / Koper (26 juin – 28 août) L'« Adriatic Express » de la compagnie ferroviaire polonaise – avec Koper comme nouvelle deuxième destination. Il passe par Vienne, ce qui le rend aussi intéressant pour un départ depuis l'Allemagne ou l'Autriche. À partir de 45 € (siège) / 70 € (couchette). Voiture-restaurant jusqu'à Vienne.

Ambiance portuaire à Split, où l'un des trains de nuit saisonniers peut t'emmener

Innsbruck – Malmö (4 juillet – 1er août) Snälltåget relie directement l'Autriche au sud de la Suède – via Munich, Hambourg et Copenhague. Voitures à places assises et voitures-couchettes, voiture-restaurant « Krogen » sur tout le trajet. Tarifs à venir.

Malmö – Storlien (24 juin – 4 oct.) Également par Snälltåget, cette fois vers les montagnes du Fjäll suédois. Arrêts à Åre et Östersund – idéal pour les randonnées d'été et d'automne. Si tu pars de Hambourg le matin, tu te réveilles le lendemain dans le Fjäll. 

Bucarest – Istanbul (13 juin – 10 oct.) Sur les traces de l'Orient-Express – mais en moins cher. Une voiture-couchette turque, près de 24 heures de trajet, compartiments à 4 lits. Environ 80 €.

Villach – Edirne (25 avril – 10 nov.) L'exceptionnel Optima Express – deux nuits et un jour de l'Autriche à la frontière turque, en traversant les Balkans. Principalement un train auto-couchettes, mais aussi accessible sans véhicule. À partir de 232 € (couchette en cabine partagée).

Des trains de nuit complets – un mythe ?

Nous nous sommes posé la question : quelle est la popularité des trains de nuit cet été ? Avec la crise pétrolière et la hausse des prix du kérosène, on pourrait supposer que beaucoup de voyageurs choisissent cette année le train plutôt que l'avion.
